MORE.. MORE......

16 July 2009 20:26:54
We need more sunshine! Managed to do a blast of weeding in the fine weather we had yesterday, it felt great to have spent the whole day outside with muddy hands. Today it was fine for the first half of the day, so made a shape on the veg patch (remains of)... I actually found some carrots and beans, the stubs of some rabbit mangled leeks and a few forgotten weedy cabbages.... then the heaven's opened and everything stopped... AGAIN... This weather is just about doing my head in and I'm sure everyone elses!

IF YOU CAN'T BEAT THEM....

IF YOU CAN'T BEAT THEM....

IF YOU CAN'T BEAT THEM....

I haven't resorted to dressing up in a bunny outfit..yet.... but I have called it quits on trying to tend my (non exsistant) veg. Besides, it hasn't stopped raining torrentially for about two weeks, not exactly prime ripening weather! We have some vague plans to make some garedn rooms/moomin houses and have been collecting windows over the last few months. We now have an extensive collection of glass of varying heights, widths, depths and thickness,... we're just waiting to hear of some free wood going.

As for the veg patch.. I am waiting on a semi clandestine delivery of a poly-tunnel frame.. we know a man who knows a man who knows where there's one lying idle.. that sort of thing. That should keep the little fluffy bleeders out!

Weeds are everywhere! The yard is slowly being reclaimed by nature and no amount of hand weeding will prevail. Grass and chamomile is taking over the asylum! mind you, at least they do come up fairly easily once you lay into it... there's just.. sooo. much.....

And finally.. there's the music! We've started getting out busking and playing a few little gigs... so the garden has sort of taken on a sidewards priority.. mind you, the two go together beautifully when the sun shines!

DARN WAAABITS....!

10 June 2009 20:57:38

Unfortunately my mother has commandeered the camera, so I can't give any updated photos. But... I can tell everyone that there's not a whole lot to look at.. thanks to bleedin bunny waaabits! All of our brassica's have been obliterated, in one night's eating and they started on the carrots and spring onions.. and leeks!! I didn't even think that rabbits would eat oniony things!?

Anyway, I'm not a happy bunny and we have the shotguns at the ready!.... except we get eaten by midges within two seconds of sitting out.... grrrrrrrrrrr. If anyone has any tips for keeping rabbits off (except the obvious use of extensive secure fencing) hopeful..yes... we are! cheers!

SOMETHING HAS BEEN DONE!

it's alive!

it's alive!

Well, after slogging it out with the fork, rake and spade for the last few weeks, we have progress! It even has a fence, a gate and a few things planted in it. Veggie patch is what I'm talking about. The inevitable sod's law kicked in the day after I planted everything, with the weather turning to torrential rain which sent a small river flowing through our yard and cascading out into the field. It now has two inches of water laying on it and it's taken me until today to get brave enough to go down and check my patch. Thankfully it looks fine, covered in beech leaf bits, but not swimming!..yay! Also managed to plant up most of my seeds which are thriving nicely. So far we have: peas, broad beans, carrots, spring onions (red and white), cabage and purple sprouting brocolli, leeks and black salsify (bought because it looks cool). Fingers crossed..no more rain.... tee hee...

IT'S OFFICIAL....

16 April 2009 10:40:53

Hello!.. here I am.. commited to conquering my garden plans. I recently went for a flying visit to my Aunt and Uncles place in Mayo, not only was it fantastic to see them again (thankfully unchanged).. but their garden and their enthusiasm and obvious knowledge has spurred me on. I have been feebly digging my vegetable patch all through the early part of the year, hampered by weather and all the usual things and now have a patch just about big enough to do us for the summer. The plan is though to have a proper allotment sized piece of ground so that I can have allocated brassica, root and leaf beds which I can then rotate and have an area left fallow every year. I'm hoping to get to a point where I'm self sufficient in veg all year round.. no point planning if you don't plan big!..*snort!..

Anyway, I will get some more pictures up soon of my little piece of heaven, cheers for reading! Vick..
