Tips for Maintaining Your Indoor and Greenhouse Plants in October

Greenhouse Cleanup and Maintenance

  • Remove old plants and tidy up all greenhouse debris and weeds to leave it neat and clean.
  • Water sparingly and check for pests.
  • Clear out greenhouse crops such as tomatoes, chillies, melons, and cucumbers as they finish.
  • Throw out any old or half-dead plants, as they can harbor pests and diseases.
  • Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny, breezy days.

House Plant Care in October

  • Stop feeding house plants and do not resume until growth begins next year.
  • Water house plants just enough to keep the compost moist, but never wet.
  • Do not stand plants in saucers of water.
  • Remove dust from plant leaves.

Overwintering and Preparing for Winter

  • Place rooted cuttings in a bright position.
  • Keep winter plants, such as Christmas azaleas, in a suitable environment.
  • Stop feeding and water only plants that are still in active growth, such as cyclamen, but be careful not to over-water.

Harvesting and Ripening Greenhouse Produce

  • Harvest the last greenhouse tomatoes as they struggle to ripen towards the end of the season.
  • If tomatoes don’t ripen in the greenhouse, pick them and ripen them indoors.
  • Tidy the greenhouse and ensure proper ventilation on sunny, breezy days.
