Moss Control
- If moss was a problem last winter and spring, use sulphate of iron to knock it back before the wet season begins.
- Treat lawn moss with sulphate of iron as it enters its prime season.
Fertilization and Lawn Health
- Apply an autumn lawn fertilizer to maintain some growth through the winter and leave the lawn in good condition for spring.
- Do not use fertilizer on a wildflower lawn.
- Use an autumn lawn fertilizer soon before it gets too wet.
Mowing and Leaf Management
- Continue mowing as necessary, provided the soil is not soggy.
- Grass can grow very long if not mowed after October, so keep up with regular mowing.
- Rake off leaves from the lawn or pick them up with a rotary mower to prevent smothering the grass.
Sowing and Repairing Lawns
- Although time for sowing a lawn is getting tighter as the weather gets cooler and more damp, there are usually still good opportunities.
- Sow a new lawn, or over-sow bare or worn patches in an existing lawn.
- Use sods from an out-of-the-way corner to patch worn areas and re-seed the area where the sods were lifted.
Lawn Edging and Maintenance
- Trim edges where the lawn meets borders and paved areas to maintain a neat appearance.
