The Irish National Stud & Gardens #SP

Where Horses, Horticulture and Heritage Meet

Catherine Brady by Catherine Brady
October 8, 2025

In the heart of County Kildare, visit the Irish National Stud & Gardens to experience horses, horticulture and heritage in a setting that is both historic and inspiring. For gardeners, the grounds hold a wealth of interest, from the classical Japanese design to landscapes rooted in Ireland’s monastic tradition.

The Japanese Gardens, created between 1906 and 1910 by master horticulturist Tassa Eida, are widely considered a masterpiece of Japanese landscape design in Europe. They represent the “Life of Man” through a series of symbolic paths, bridges, water, planting and pruning. The striking red bridge and the tea house are iconic features along the journey. Gardeners can admire the precision of cloud pruning used to shape the evergreens around the garden – a discipline that accentuates the balance of stone, water, colour and planting, resulting in a garden where every element is symbolic in telling the story.

St. Fiachra’s Garden, opened in 1999, offers a contrasting Irish counterpoint to the precision of the Japanese Gardens. Inspired by the spirituality of Ireland’s early monks, it combines monastic cells, granite boulders and reflective pools, alongside a lake and waterfall, to replicate the wild Irish landscape. This garden is also renowned for being a haven for biodiversity: native planting supports a wide variety of flora and fauna, from wildflowers and grasses to a variety of pollinators. It is both a place of contemplation and a living, breathing ecosystem.

Together these gardens complement the wider experience of the Stud Farm, where visitors can join a guided tour of the Stud, explore the grounds, meet the stallions, mares, foals and Living Legends – retired racing champions – and enjoy the award-winning Irish Racehorse Experience. Visitors can also enjoy lunch, teas, coffees and desserts in the Japanese Gardens Restaurant, and for those with younger families there is a playground, picnic areas and and magical fairy trail adjacent to the paddocks and gardens. The exclusive retail area features a bespoke range of gifts, clothing, books, stationery and more, offering something special to take home.

For a day of horses, horticulture and heritage, the Irish National Stud & Gardens is an experience worth making the time for. It’s not just a day out, it’s a day off.
