January 29 – February 4
Key Tasks:
- Mow lawn areas early in the year, but not too tightly at this stage.
- Tidy lawn edges using edging shears or a strimmer.
- Apply lawn mosskiller for heavy moss growth, and plan for lawn feeding later in spring.
- Remove humps and hollows in the lawn while the soil is moist and sods are easily lifted.
February 5 – February 11
Key Tasks:
- Begin lawn mowing as soon as the soil is not squelchy underfoot.
- Apply sulphate of iron to kill moss if necessary, even though it may blacken the grass temporarily.
- Straighten lawn edges and sort out humps and hollows.
- Control weeds on areas for sowing grass in March or April, by hoeing or spraying with Roundup, and allow the soil to settle.
February 12 – February 18
Key Tasks:
- Perform early mowing to avoid cutting the lawn down hard later.
- Mow once now, and again in three or four weeks to keep the lawn area neat and tidy before growth starts.
- Apply lawn mosskiller for heavy moss growth.
- Cultivate the ground for new lawn areas if possible, and spray off weeds with Roundup if necessary.
February 19 – February 25
Key Tasks:
- Begin regular lawn mowing, possibly requiring two cuts for heavy growth.
- Apply lawn mosskiller for heavy moss growth.
- Delay lawn feeding as fertilizer can be washed away.
- Cultivate the ground for new lawn areas if possible, and control or remove weeds.
February 26 – March 4
Key Tasks:
- Begin regular mowing every 7 to 10 days during dry spells, avoiding walking on wet lawns.
- Re-make edges of beds and borders with a lawn edging tool along a garden line or plank, and trim grass near kerbs and walls.
- Cultivate the ground for new lawn areas if possible, and spray off weeds first if necessary.
- Apply sulphate of iron for heavy moss growth.
