March 30, 2023

January 29 – February 4

  • Prune back large permanent greenhouse plants in the next few weeks.
  • Apply rose sprays to glasshouse grapevines when the first new leaves appear to prevent grape mildew.
  • Begin regular watering as plants start to make new growth. Feeding can also begin, but growth is still slow.

February 5 – February 11

  • Increase watering and begin feeding greenhouse plants in pots to re-start strong growth.
  • Sow seeds of tomatoes, peppers, and chillies for greenhouse growing.
  • Check for signs of greenflies and other pests on greenhouse and house plants, and control them if necessary.

February 12 – February 18

  • Gently pollinate the first flowers of greenhouse peach trees with a small soft paintbrush or by tapping support wires on a sunny day.
  • Water a grapevine well to encourage early growth and better ripening.

February 19 – February 25

  • Sow seeds of tomatoes, peppers, and chillies for greenhouse growing to ensure timely cropping and ripening.
  • Increase watering for most greenhouse plants in pots as growth begins.
  • Enjoy the perfect blooms of greenhouse camellias in pots.
  • Begin feeding greenhouse plants.
  • Tap the flowers of a peach tree to release pollen or use a fine brush.

February 26 – March 4

  • Sow tomato seeds for greenhouse growing, as well as sweet peppers and chilli peppers, before mid-March to avoid delayed cropping.
  • Pot up begonias and cannas for summer display in the greenhouse or conservatory.
  • Feed and water all greenhouse plants.
  • Check for pests, especially greenflies, on the tips of new growth.
  • Tap the flowers of a peach tree to release pollen or use a fine brush.
